The Green Vibes Project - A Big, Floating, Blue Ball

from mix tape by Ryan J Williams

/

about

“A Big, Floating, Blue Ball” opens with a mournful and reflective vibraphone solo, sharing a haunting and lyrical melody. This is followed a B section that features the “junk” percussion quartet, mimicking Latin percussion sounds using various found objects. Throughout this middle section, the players are given the freedom to include their own personalities in the work with open solo/ improvisatory sections. Finally, the piece closes with a recapitulation of the opening solo. During these closing thoughts, the “junk” percussion instruments are left on the vibraphone bars in such a way that certain tones are hindered, leaving an empty feeling of incomplete melodic lines.
The Green Vibes Project is a new venture with the main goal to promote the composition and performance of new and lesser-known musical works for vibraphone. The project was started in 2018 by percussionist and oboist husband and wife Chase and Christine Banks. As the name states, this “green” organization focuses on commissioning music that utilizes metal-based instruments, and recycled instrumentation (i.e. recyclable materials such as scrap metal, cardboard, glass bottles, etc.) to promote environmental sustainability, and provide meaningful repertoire to the percussion literature.
